About
A pair of painted trunks are acquired from Beijing. They were originally made in the late Qing Dynasty for a newlywed couple of a noble family in the capital of China. The one with the still-life drawing is for the bridegroom. The hat in the drawing represents a wish for high status; the feather pens inside of the vases show the bridegroom as an intellectual or a scholar; there is also a Chinese Double Happiness word喜喜 in the middle of the drawing, which means congratulation to the marriage. The bride’s trunk was drawn with peonies, which is the first of one hundred flowers, symbolises the beauty, noble, and elegance of the bride. There are countless daisies on the trunks, which signify happiness, purity, innocence, peace, hope, and beauty. Most importantly daisy represents love in Chinese culture.
Interestingly the sizes of the pair of trunks are slightly different. The bride’s trunk is a bit smaller than the bridegroom’s. This showed the world over 100 years ago in China was a different place for men and women from today, which was an empire-dominated men’s world. However these pair of trunks are beautiful treasures to keep.
The trunks are restored. Both moon locks on the front are replacements. The handles on the sides are original.
