About
This charm historic four-door and three-drawer Manchuria sideboard has been restored and relacquered but was thoroughly kept its beautiful original burgundy red colour tone and the chrysanthemum and butterflies paint on the front of the sideboard also kept the tung oil finish on the top during the restoration.
This Sideboard was made during the 1920s in Manchuria with the drawers on the bottom of the cabinet, which is reverse to the traditional classic Manchuria sideboard (the drawers on the top of the cabinet) because the carpentry of this piece had a strong influence from Japan. Manchuria was a Japanese colony from 1918-1945.
The chrysanthemum has always been favored by Chinese poets. The ancients especially liked the name of the chrysanthemum to compare their noble sentiment and unyielding. Therefore, the chrysanthemum traditionally represents a noble character. Chrysanthemum is an autumn flower growing against wind and frost, has tenacious vitality, in Japan the flower stands for a sharp sense of integrity, noble moral principle. Chrysanthemum is also a symbol of the Japanese royal family. With all the indictions on this piece we can imagine the sideboard could be made originally for a Japanese family who lived in Manchuria during the 1920s. This unique sideboard is a perfect combination of Chinese and Japanese culture.
