About
This classic Chinese historic four-door and three-drawers sideboard was originally made for a newly wedded couple. It has been restored and relacquered but was thoroughly kept its beautiful original burgundy red colour tone, the worn golden line drawings on the front, and the original tung oil finish on the top during the restoration.
This old Chinese wedding cabinet was original from Manchuria China and was called ‘Kang Piano’ and placed on the top of ‘Kang’ – a huge warm bed in northern China. Kang Piano used to be a piece of extremely popular furniture in Manchuria for over two thousand years. This style of furniture stopped making in the mid of the last century due to the developments of modern conditions and the cultural change in society.
In ancient times, Kang Piano was mainly made of solid wood with a few carved tricks, the overall appearance of the wood is the original primitive pattern. About 300 years ago, drawings were introduced into the making of furniture. Artists are mostly folk artists, who would come to stay at your home for a couple of weeks to paint the Kang Piano you wish for.
The drawings on the piece are full of good wish metaphors for their marriage and their future life together. All the alive creatures and flowers are in pairs: a pair of birds flying on a pomegranate means this pair who will love and be loyal to each other and will have lots of children in the future; a pair of crabs represent good fortune in the life. The still life scene with a desk and vases shows their peaceful and scholarly lifestyle. The sunflowers with 2 butterflies show their honey love with prosperity. The Chinese 卍字 (wànzì) without end drawing on the frames is a metaphor for the couple’s life, which will be continuous auspiciousness, longevity, and boundless.
