About
A Chinese Qing Dynasty red lacquer cabinet from the 19th century exemplifies traditional bridal dowry furniture from Shanxi province. Standing at a commanding yet elegant stature, the cabinet has undergone meticulous professional restoration to preserve its historical integrity while ensuring structural stability and aesthetic vitality for modern interiors.
The cabinet’s façade immediately captures attention through its vibrant original red lacquer, masterfully preserved and enriched with hand-painted gilt Chinoiserie landscapes and dramatic figural scenes drawn from classical Chinese literary and theatrical traditions.
Unlike standard floral medallion cabinets, this rare example elevates its iconography with elaborate hand-painted narrative panels, depicting iconic characters from ancient Chinese drama and folklore. These scenes, executed in fine-line gold with subtle polychrome accents, lend a theatrical grandeur befitting a dowry centrepiece.
Key Figural Scenes inside (2 circles on the top of the 2 doors):
- “The Butterfly Lovers” (Liang Shanbo & Zhu Yingtai – 梁山伯與祝英台)
- A scholar in flowing robes and a maiden in phoenix-embroidered skirt stand beneath a willow, exchanging a jade pendant.
- Meaning: Eternal love transcending death; the ultimate wish for marital fidelity.
- “The West Chamber” (Zhang Sheng & Cui Yingying – 西廂記)

- A scholar climbs a wall to meet his beloved under lantern light, with a maidservant as an accomplice.

These dramatic vignettes transform the cabinet from mere furniture into a visual love letter—a dowry gift imbued with aspirational narratives for the bride and groom. Each scene embodies confident, passionate, and enduring love, drawn from the most beloved tales in Chinese opera and literature, ensuring the couple’s union is blessed with romance, resilience, and cultural refinement.
Supplementary Landscape Elements:
- Background: Stones, mist-shrouded pavilions, and gnarled pines—evoking the Shanxi scholarly ideal of retreat and harmony.
- Water lily: Purity & moral integrity.
- Dragonfly: Beauty and transformation.
