About
This antique Chinese wedding cabinet originates from Manchuria, China, and was traditionally known as a “Kang Piano”, designed to be placed atop the Kang – a large, heated bed common in northern China.
The Kangqi sideboard has a rich history rooted in Chinese furniture craftsmanship, particularly in Manchuria. Its origins can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912), during which furniture design emphasised both functionality and artistic expression. In Manchuria, which is the homeland of the Manchu people, furniture making developed distinct characteristics. The Kangqi sideboard became a symbol of refined craftsmanship, blending traditional Han Chinese and Manchu stylistic elements.
Originally, the sideboard served practical purposes within noble households, serving as storage for household items, ceremonial objects, or tea ware. Its robust construction made it suitable for the cold climate and durable use. This Sdeboard features a timeless, stately appearance and has been meticulously restored with a high-lacquered finish.
