About
An exquisitely restored antique cabinet, featuring two doors and two drawers, has been meticulously returned to its former splendour. This distinguished piece is adorned with two intricately carved panels that encircle the entire structure. The carvings depict dynamic sea waves—a motif rich in cultural symbolism. In Chinese tradition, the sound of waves, pronounced cháo (潮), is homophonous with cháo (朝), meaning “high status.” Thus, the wave pattern conveys a profound wish for family members to secure prestigious positions within the imperial bureaucracy, symbolising aspirations for elevated social standing.
Likely crafted for a scholarly or official household in Xi’an, this cabinet not only serves as a functional storage piece but also as a tangible embodiment of familial ambition and cultural heritage from a bygone era.
