This old Chinese wedding cabinet was original from Manchuria China and was called ‘Kang Piano’ and placed on the top of ‘Kang’ – a huge warm bed in northern China. Kang Piano used to be a piece of extremely popular furniture in Manchuria for over two thousand years. This style of furniture has been stopped making since the mid of the last century with the developments of modern conditions and society.
In ancient times, Kang Pianos were mainly made of solid wood with a few carved tricks, the overall appearance of the wood is the original primitive pattern. About 300 years ago, drawings were introduced into the making of furniture. Artists are mostly folk artists, who would come to your home to stay for 2 or 3 weeks especially to paint the cabinet with watercolour paintings in Chinese style, or draw the pictures with gold powder as the newly wedded couple wishes. The painting patterns are landscape, flowers and folklore legend fragments.
This Kong Piano was made of the finest pine wood with tenon and mortise structure. The top of the sideboard was originally painted with red tung oil and was kept that way after the restoration. The front of the cabinet was drawn purely by gold powder. The piece has been made for over 100 years. The drawings on the piece gradually grew faint and disappeared. However we can still vaguely see the trees and plants on each door.
