About
An original old two doors and 2 drawers cabinet has been restored to its old day glory. The piece has 2 carved panels on each side of the whole piece. The carved partners are the sea waves which represent the wishes that the members of the family could get a job in the Imperial service. In Chinese the sounds of sea waves made up are pronounced 潮 cháo, which is the same as 朝 cháo ‘Imperial court’ and so waves symbolise a wish for a higher status in society in the past. This piece possibly was made for an official family in Xi’an City. The frames on this piece including the door frames were orginally shaped in half-round, which shows the dedication of the old Chinese carpentry.
