About
A beautifully preserved late-19th-century cabinet in deep-red lacquer, featuring distinguished traditional recessed floating-panel construction. This rare piece was acquired from Xi’an, Shanxi Province.
The cabinet’s impressive visual presence derives from its imposing scale, original colour, well-preserved surface, and wonderful patina. The symmetrical panelled front creates a striking yet refined linear effect, accentuating the elegant A-shaped silhouette. The two doors are ingeniously designed to close vertically by gravity. A delicately carved, slim panel above the doors adds vitality to the otherwise solemn composition.
The piece exhibits fully rounded outlines—including all corners—a classical design hallmark of Chinese furniture from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, originating in the Ming Dynasty.
Traditional Chinese domestic architecture made no provision for built-in storage or cupboards; consequently, impressive tall cabinets such as this were custom-commissioned for prominent families as symbols of status and wealth. For modern convenience, our restorer has added a removable interior shelf.
The cabinet retains 100 % of its original features, including the authentic colour, and has been protected with a final layer of transparent lacquer.
